Car rental is the most convenient way to explore southwestern France and the mountain roads of the Pyrenees.
The traffic in and around Toulouse is generally manageable. To save time, consider avoiding rush hour between 7am and 9am and between 5pm and 8pm. Traffic increases during the holiday season when ski centres near Toulouse draw numerous winter sports enthusiasts. For safe driving in the mountains and on snowy roads, Liigu offers snow chains as an extra for your rental car.
For driving in Toulouse, a small or compact rental car is an excellent choice. For longer trips to the vineyards and picturesque villages of Languedoc and Gascony, we recommend renting an SUV or a larger car for added comfort.
The speed limit in urban areas across France is typically 50 km/h, with some areas in city centres reduced to 30 km/h. Two- to three-lane roads have a speed limit of 80 km/h, and four-lane expressways are limited to 110 km/h. On motorways, the speed limit is 130 km/h. These limits are reduced in cases of rain or snowfall for safety. Additionally, it's useful to know that green directional signs indicate a non-motorway main route or a 'free road', while blue signs signify a motorway, often marked 'péage', which means you'll need to pay a toll.
