The best way to explore the secrets of Milan? By car!
Renting a car is the most convenient way to discover Lombardy and its heart, Milan. You'll save significant time reaching the city by renting a car directly from the airport.
There are three airports nearby. Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), located about 30 miles northwest of Milan, is the largest and busiest airport in Italy. Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) is located 28 miles northeast of the city. Many low-cost airlines, including Ryanair, use Bergamo as their hub in Northern Italy. Milan Linate Airport (LIN), only 4 miles from Milan's center, is a smaller airport that primarily services domestic and shorter international flights.
If you're planning to explore Italy, renting an SUV is a good idea. However, for navigating Milan's city streets, we recommend choosing a smaller car. The crowded conditions and limited parking in the city center make smaller vehicles easier to manage.
Milan is a popular destination for both tourism and business travel. Therefore, we advise planning extra time for your road trips, especially to account for potential rush-hour traffic in and around the city. Typically, traffic jams are more frequent from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Certain highways, such as the A50 and A51 around the city and the A7 between Milan and Genoa, tend to be busier than others.
Staying longer? Rent a car in Italy for 1–24 months with Liigu Car Subscription.
