The best way to explore the secrets of Lyon? By car!

Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore the scenic surroundings of Lyon and the Alps region.

Traffic in and around Lyon can be heavy. To save time, consider avoiding rush hour between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Additionally, Lyon is located on the 'holiday route' from Paris to the Mediterranean coast. This causes the A6 and A7 motorways—connecting Lyon to Paris and Avignon—to become especially congested during the summer holiday season. For a more relaxed journey, allow extra travel time on these routes during the summer months.

For driving in Lyon city, we suggest renting a smaller or compact car. If you plan longer trips to the vineyards in the Rhône valley or to the ski centers in the Alps, then a convenient SUV or a more spacious car is a great choice.

The speed limit in urban areas across France is typically 31 mph, with some downtown areas reduced to 18 mph. Two- to three-lane roads have a speed limit of 49 mph, and four-lane highways are limited to 68 mph. On highways, the speed limit is 80 mph. These limits are reduced in cases of rain or snowfall for safety. Additionally, it's useful to know that green directional signs indicate a non-highway main route or a 'free road', while blue signs signify a highway, often marked 'péage', which means you'll need to pay a toll.

Staying longer? Rent a car in France for 1–24 months with Liigu Car Subscription.
