The best way to explore the secrets of Lyon? By car!

Car rental is a great way to explore the Alps region and scenic surroundings of Lyon.

You can expect heavy traffic in and around Lyon. To save time, you might wish to avoid the rush hour between 8 and 10 AM, and between 4 and 6 PM. Lyon city is on the so-called “holiday route” from Paris to the Mediterranean coast. This means that in the summer, the highways A6 and A7 that connect Lyon to Paris and Avignon, are often congested. To keep your vacation stress-free, plan more time for these roads during the summer months.

For driving in Lyon city, we suggest renting a smaller or compact car. If you plan longer trips to the vineyards in the Rhône valley or to the ski centers in the Alps, then a convenient SUV or a more spacious car is a great choice.

The speed limit in urban areas across France is typically 31 mph (50 km/h) and sometimes 18 mph (30 km/h) in downtown areas. Two to three-lane roads have a speed limit of 80 km/h (49 mph), and four-lane roads of 68 mph (110 km/h). On motorways, the speed limit is 80 mph (130 km/h). All these limits are lower in case of rain or snowfall. It is also good to know the different colors of the French road signs. Green ones point to a non-highway or a "free road" while blue signs indicate a highway route and are often marked "péage" which means you’ll need to pay a road toll.
