If you plan to explore more of Île-de-France, see the Loire valley castles, or travel around Picardy and Normandy regions, it would be a good idea to rent an SUV or a more spacious car for your comfort. For driving in Paris city, we rather recommend a smaller car as streets are crowded and parking in the city centre is limited.

The speed limit in urban areas across France is typically 50 km/h (31 mph) and sometimes 30 km/h (18 mph) in downtown areas. Two to three-lane roads have a speed limit of 80 km/h (49 mph), and four-lane roads of 110 km/h (68 mph). On motorways, the speed limit is 130 km/h (80 mph). All these limits are lower in case of rain or snowfall. It’s also good to know that green directional signs point to a non-motorway main route or a "free road". The blue signs indicate a motorway route and are often marked "péage" meaning you’ll need to pay a road toll.
